I’ve heard it said that what people call boredom and laziness are actually cover-ups for deeper emotions that are unexplored. I’d be curious to hear why a person would disengage in the first place and persist with it even though its obviously causing discomfort.

    • yes, though I’m not sure we always know we have disengaged. In fact, when we know, it’s actually a little bit more like dishonesty than it is disengagement.

This may sound like a wise ass remark but its not. Isn’t it possible that you don’t see clients who say they wish they’d chased after money more because those folks are too broke for therapy?

    • no, this cracks me up. Studies have shown that people who read magazines are more attractive and live longer, too. (because they read magazines? or do they read magazines because they have more time and money which helps them live longer? and maybe more attractive people get to make more money and therefore live longer?) In any case, you might be right but I would also tell you there are clients I’ve had for years that still pay me $10 a month.
